Where Does Asbestos Come From and Why Is It Dangerous?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used for many decades in construction materials because of its strength, heat resistance, and fireproof qualities. It can be found in insulation, drywall, popcorn ceilings, linoleum flooring, mastic adhesive, roofing materials, and heating ducts. However, over time it was discovered that asbestos fibers can become airborne and, when inhaled, may cause serious health problems such as lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.

For this reason, asbestos use is now banned, and only licensed and certified contractors —like M&M Abatement & Restoration LLC— are authorized to remove and dispose of it safely, following DEQ and OSHA regulations.

Protect Your Family from Asbestos-Contaminated Vermiculite Insulation

Why should I be concerned about asbestos-contaminated vermiculite insulation?

A mine near Libby, Montana, was the source of more than 70 percent of all vermiculite sold in the U.S. from 1919 to 1990. This mine also contained an asbestos deposit, so vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos. Vermiculite from Libby was used in most U.S. insulation and was sold under the trade name "Zonolite."

If you have vermiculite insulation in your home, you should assume it may be contaminated with asbestos and be aware of the steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from asbestos exposure.
